Combining 26 years of grassroots cultural expertise with AI-enabled digital infrastructure to expand community tourism, livelihoods, and market access.
MADRID, SPAIN, October 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Artisanal Collective, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, and Contact Base (banglanatak dot com), an India-based NGO accredited by UNESCO in the field of intangible cultural heritage, today announced a strategic collaboration to help communities, NGOs, and governments strengthen cultural economies through artisan empowerment, cultural preservation, community-based tourism, digital innovation, and expanded market access.
The announcement coincides with meetings in Madrid with UN Tourism teams to explore opportunities to strengthen community-based tourism, living heritage, and sustainable local economic development.
The collaboration combines Contact Base’s 26 years of grassroots experience, including training more than 80,000 artisans and developing over 30 cultural destinations across India, with Artisanal Collective’s Artisan Empowerment & Market Access System (AEMS), shared digital infrastructure connecting cultural communities with markets, travelers, and institutional partners.
Connecting Cultural, Craft, and Community Tourism with Economic Opportunity
Across the Global South, communities sustain extraordinary traditions, craftsmanship, performing arts, and cultural knowledge, yet often lack the visibility and resources needed to translate these assets into sustainable livelihoods.
Community-based tourism can generate revenue across local economies by connecting travelers with artisan workshops, festivals, performances, local cuisine, heritage trails, and authentic cultural experiences.
The collaboration seeks to integrate crafts, heritage, and tourism so economic opportunities reach artisans, guides, accommodation providers, food producers, cultural practitioners, and other community enterprises.
Its objective is to help communities develop, manage, and benefit from tourism on their own terms while safeguarding cultural identity and ownership.
Contact Base: 26 Years of Community-Centered Cultural Development
Contact Base’s holistic approach combines artisan training, cultural preservation, festivals, exhibitions, heritage promotion, and community-based tourism with practical knowledge sharing.
Having trained more than 80,000 artisans, the organization emphasizes transferring methodologies and capabilities to NGOs, governments, institutions, and community organizations so they can adapt and sustain successful approaches.
This regenerative model strengthens local leadership and connects cultural preservation with economic empowerment.
“Our work has always been about much more than preserving traditional crafts or organizing cultural events. It is about helping communities recognize the value of their cultural heritage, build their capabilities, and create sustainable livelihoods. By sharing our experience and knowledge with other organizations and governments, we can help extend these opportunities to many more communities. Our collaboration with Artisanal Collective offers an opportunity to complement this grassroots approach with digital tools that can expand visibility, connections, and economic participation,” said Amitava Bhattacharya, Founder Director, Contact Base.
AEMS: Connecting Grassroots Expertise with Digital Innovation
Artisanal Collective has launched the AEMS Living Heritage Lab as shared digital infrastructure supporting cultural engagement, market access, and economic participation.
Rather than operating as a conventional online marketplace, AEMS supports diverse commercial pathways and community development models.
Its evolving capabilities include digital product passports that document makers and cultural origins; AI-assisted multilingual storytelling; community-approved digital engagement; wholesale and other market connections; community tourism discovery; and documentation of oral traditions and traditional knowledge, with appropriate consent and stewardship.
“Cultural heritage represents an extraordinary but often underrecognized source of economic opportunity. The challenge is not simply to digitize artisan products or promote destinations, but to connect the entire ecosystem—from grassroots training and cultural preservation to storytelling, market access, and community tourism. Contact Base brings decades of hands-on experience in participatory, community-led development, with a strong emphasis on strengthening local capacities and fostering sustainable livelihoods. Together with AEMS, we see the potential to make these capabilities more accessible to communities and institutions around the world, while ensuring that cultural ownership and economic benefits remain rooted locally,” said Charles Kao, Founder and Chairman, Artisanal Collective.
Explorer Journeys: Connecting Travelers with Living Heritage
Explorer Journeys, an independent, free AI-assisted travel discovery and planning platform within the emerging AEMS ecosystem, is being developed for a planned January 2027 launch.
It aims to help travelers research destinations, discover expert recommendations, coordinate group travel, and organize itineraries while connecting with external booking accounts.
The platform also aims to make lesser-known cultural destinations easier to discover, including villages recognized by UN Tourism’s Best Tourism Villages initiative, UNESCO Creative Cities, and World Crafts Council Craft Cities.
By helping travelers incorporate rural destinations, artisan workshops, cultural performances, and heritage experiences into their itineraries, Explorer Journeys seeks to translate cultural visibility into economic opportunities for local communities.
Contact Base’s experience developing more than 30 cultural destinations across India provides a complementary foundation for connecting community readiness with traveler discovery and demand.
A Globally Adaptable Framework
The collaboration seeks to make grassroots methodologies, practical knowledge, and digital tools more accessible to NGOs, governments, development agencies, and cultural institutions internationally.
Rather than imposing standardized approaches, it emphasizes community participation, local adaptation, knowledge transfer, and sustainable capacity building.
The Madrid discussions with UN Tourism teams offer an opportunity to explore how cultural heritage, community tourism, and digital innovation can support inclusive rural development and stronger local economies.
The organizations share a vision in which communities are not merely custodians of heritage or participants in tourism, but active owners and beneficiaries of the opportunities their traditions create.
