Commercial underwriting is moving from routine risk processing toward strategic decision-making, and today’s professionals need the judgment and modern skills to make stronger decisions in an increasingly complex environment. As AI, automation, and analytics handle more of the process-driven tasks, the most valuable expertise is quickly becoming the ability to interpret information, weigh uncertainty, and act with confidence. Amid this rapidly changing landscape, more than 80% of surveyed carrier leaders named maintaining underwriting discipline among their top three challenges, according to a recent McKinsey article. In response, The Institutes Designations have updated the Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU™) with all-new content that prepares individuals to evaluate complex commercial risks and make stronger underwriting decisions.
Designed around practical application, the new AU uses commercial underwriting examples and decision-focused learning to help professionals apply modern skills and stronger judgment to situations they may encounter on the job. The program emphasizes the need for commercial underwriters to remain the human in the loop as technology evolves, so AI and technology are strategically woven throughout the program to help students use modern tools appropriately, interpret data and outputs, and recognize where human influence and expertise matter most.
“As AI, automation, and increasingly complex risks reshape commercial underwriting, expert human judgment is more important than ever,” said Adam Carmichael, CPCU, Group President of The Institutes. “Technology can process information and surface patterns at a scale no person can match, but it can’t weigh competing priorities, account for context, or take responsibility for a decision. That work will always belong to the underwriter. That’s why we designed the new Associate in Commercial Underwriting designation to prepare professionals to combine emerging technology with stronger decision-making.”
The Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) is backed by The Institutes’ experience as a not-for-profit since 1909, committed to helping individuals and organizations succeed by educating, elevating, and connecting those interested in risk management and insurance to create a more informed, resilient world. AU is designed for commercial underwriters and insurance professionals who want to make stronger decisions with modern skills, strengthen their judgment and risk-selection capabilities, and build the expertise needed to remain relevant as technology transforms the underwriting role. With three new courses, a CPCU elective, and an ethics requirement from The Institutes Knowledge Group, the new program builds applied analytical, technological, and strategic expertise needed to confidently evaluate commercial risks and ensure overall portfolio health.
