A new consumer clean-energy market is beginning to take shape in the United States, and plug-in solar is becoming one of its clearest early signals.
Bright Saver, the nonprofit working to make clean energy dramatically more accessible and affordable, today launched its second crowdfunding campaign through climate investment platform Climatize.
The campaign comes as plug-in solar gains significant momentum across the country. New Jersey became the latest state to legalize the technology this month, while California legislation passed the Legislature and awaits signature. Bright Saver now counts 11 states that have passed plug-in solar legislation, with bills introduced across 35 states nationwide. Bright Saver’s live 50-state legislation tracker follows where plug-in solar policy stands and what is moving next.
That rapid movement is helping turn a technology already widely used in parts of Europe into an emerging consumer clean-energy category in the U.S.
Plug-in solar systems can be installed on a balcony, fence, wall or other suitable space and connected to a standard outdoor outlet, giving renters, apartment dwellers and homeowners who cannot install conventional rooftop solar another way to generate some of their own electricity.
A Different Model for Clean Energy
For Bright Saver, the opportunity is much bigger than solar panels.
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit was created around a different model for accelerating clean-energy adoption: make new technologies affordable enough for ordinary households to participate, organize those consumers to help remove the regulatory barriers standing in their way, and use the scale of that growing community to make the next technology easier and less expensive to access.
Bright Saver sells plug-in solar kits to members at cost, without adding a product markup. A $29 annual membership gives consumers access to the nonprofit’s at-cost pricing, with kits currently starting at $285.30 for a 180 W system. Bright Saver is funded through memberships and philanthropy rather than profits on the hardware it sells.
Demand Is There. Now Comes Scale.
Bright Saver’s model is built around purchasing panels and equipment in volume and passing those savings directly to members. As plug-in solar becomes available in more states and more consumers discover the technology, the organization is preparing for a significantly larger addressable market.
The appetite for Bright Saver’s model is already clear. Its first crowdfunding offering through Climatize, launched in June 2025, reached its maximum offering amount at 248% of its initial target and closed early.
“We’ve already shown that people want this,” said Cora Stryker, co-CEO of Bright Saver. “Now the opportunity is to scale it. Every new state that opens up, every new member who joins, and every panel that gets into someone’s hands makes the market bigger. What we are building is a much easier way for Americans to access clean energy.”
Plug-In Solar Is Just the Beginning
Bright Saver sees plug-in solar as the first proof point for a much broader consumer clean-energy platform.
As its membership grows, the organization intends to apply the same model to technologies including batteries, heat pumps and clean-energy financing: remove unnecessary barriers, identify high-quality products, use collective purchasing power to lower costs and pass those savings directly to members.
“Plug-in solar is our proof point, not our finish line,” Stryker said. “If we can bring people together, remove outdated barriers and make one clean-energy technology dramatically easier to access, there is no reason to stop there. We want to do the same thing with the technologies that come next.”
The model turns Bright Saver’s membership into more than a customer base. Members create demand, strengthen the case for regulatory change and build the purchasing power that can make clean technology more affordable for the broader community.
Bright Saver believes that direct connection between household economics and climate action will bring a much larger group of Americans into the clean-energy transition.
“We don’t want clean energy to feel like something happening somewhere else, years from now,” Stryker said. “We want people to experience what it can do for them firsthand. Every new household that participates helps show what becomes possible when clean energy is designed around the consumer.”

About Bright Saver
Bright Saver is the first and only nonprofit in the United States dedicated to plug-in “balcony” solar. We believe that no American should have to choose between saving money and fighting climate change, and we have already helped pass laws in 11 states that make it easier for people to power their own homes with clean energy.
