We wanted this movie to really be Globe’s version of Tombstone, the filmmakers said. We wanted to take a story that actually happened here, use the historic locations that are still standing, and make a movie that people could watch and then come to Globe and experience for themselves.
That vision shaped nearly every part of the production. More than 70 percent of the film was shot locally, including historic locations such as Globe’s 1910 jail and the 1916 train depot, along with private historic properties and the surrounding landscapes.
Rather than creating a fictional Western town somewhere else, the filmmakers wanted audiences to see the actual places connected to Globe’s history. Streets, buildings and landmarks that have been part of the community for generations became part of the film itself.
The story first caught Shoemaker’s attention while he was portraying the hangman during Globe’s Ghosts of Globe tours. His interest in the historical case led to further research and eventually developed into the feature film that Shoemaker and Clarkson brought to the screen.
The production was also featured by Fox 10 Phoenix while filming was underway in Globe.
FROM GLOBE TO THE BIG SCREEN
The Dog Bite Murders first reached audiences through its film festival appearances before beginning its theatrical journey at Hollis Cinemas in downtown Globe.
The hometown theatrical engagement gave local residents an opportunity to see the story on the big screen in the same community where the historical events occurred and where much of the movie was filmed.
The film subsequently screened in additional theaters in Arizona and other states, including Payson, Show Low and Valdez, Alaska. It also played at FatCats Cinemas in the Phoenix area, expanding the film’s audience beyond Globe and bringing the independently produced feature to larger Arizona markets.

Shoemaker and Clarkson used USActors.com and ArizonaActors.com to search catalogs of actor profiles and connect with performers throughout the state. These resources gave the filmmakers an opportunity to review actor profiles and find performers who could become part of the production.
The filmmakers also held their first casting call locally in Globe, hoping to involve as much local talent as possible.
The finished production included local residents in speaking roles, along with more than 50 locals appearing in background roles. The goal was to make the production feel connected to the community rather than simply using Globe as a filming location.
That local involvement became another important part of the film’s identity.
