While the national conversation around higher education is dominated by rising debt and diminishing returns, Naropa University is choosing a different path. Today, Naropa announced a tuition reset for Fall 2026—lowering the cost of entry for new students, holding tuition flat for current students, and expanding opportunities for students to earn credit for prior learning.

Together, these changes are designed to remove barriers that often stand between students and their education—cost, complexity, and time—and to better support those seeking a more flexible and meaningful path forward.
Beginning in Fall 2026, Naropa will reduce tuition for incoming students through a simplified, lower per-credit rate, moving away from a more complex system of discounting. At the same time, tuition will be held flat for all continuing students for the 2026–2027 academic year, reversing a previously approved 3% increase and prioritizing cost stability for those already enrolled.
Naropa is also expanding its Credit for Prior Learning program, allowing students to apply relevant professional experience, certifications, and other forms of prior learning toward their degree. For many students—especially adult learners—this creates a more direct and accessible path to completion.
These changes were shaped by a year-long planning process that included extensive input from students, faculty, and staff. Across that process, affordability and accessibility consistently emerged as key challenges impacting both enrollment and persistence.
“We are moving past the ‘business as usual’ model of higher education,” said President Paul Burkhardt. “This reflects our commitment to making a contemplative education—one that builds courage and creativity—accessible to anyone ready to meet the world’s uncertainty with a steady heart.”
Alongside these changes, Naropa is introducing new academic programs that reflect growing interest in fields that integrate personal development with professional pathways. Nine new undergraduate and graduate programs have been developed by Naropa and approved by Higher Learning Commission with expected launch in the coming year.
New programs already open for registration for Fall 2026 include:
Most new programs will be offered in online or low-residency formats, increasing flexibility for working adults and geographically diverse students.
These initiatives are part of a broader institutional effort to align Naropa’s mission with the realities facing today’s students. The changes are supported by Naropa’s newly approved strategic framework, The Ponderosa Plan, which focuses on flexible learning pathways, long-term sustainability, and alignment with institutional values.
